                                                  Welcome To New Castle

Chappaqua is a hamlet located in theTown of New Castle in Westchester County NY.  As of the 2000 census, the population of Chappaqua was 12214. Millwood is another hamlet  in New Castle with a population of 1224.

History:On March 7, 1788 the New York State Legislature ordered that New York State Counties be divided into towns at which time the Town of North Castle was created.  On March 18, 1791, the government of New York decided to split the overly large town of North Castle (jokingly called "the two saddlebags") into two smaller towns, one of which was named New Castle. The border was drawn from the southwest corner of Bedford to the northeast edge of Mount PleasantNew Castle's borders have remained the same since 1791, except for a small piece of land received from Somers in 1846.

Government:  The Town of New Castle has a Town Supervisor - elected to a two year term and 4 Town Board Members elected to four year terms. The Town supervisor's responsibilities include:

  • Chief Elected Official of the Town and is a member of the Town Board - establishes agendas for Town Board Meetings and presides over them; votes as a member of the Town Board.
  • Signs all agreements and contracts on behalf of the Town, when authorized to do so by the Town Board.
  • Chief Fiscal Officer for the Town - responsible for maintaining financial stability of the Town and insuring residents that all funds are accounted for and expended properly.
  • The Town Board is the local legislative and policymaking body - the Board adopts and amends local laws regulating the town governance; promulgates policies about the conducting of government business; controls the use of all Town property, except that directly supervised by the Recreation Commission; adopts the annual Town Budget and establishes the tax levy for General, Highway and related funds; and serves as Commissioners of all special Town Districts.

Schools:  Residents of New Castle primarily attend the Chappaqua Central School District though some areas of northern New Castle are within the Bedford Central School District and western New Castle are within the Ossining Union Free School District.

Communities and Locations in New Castle:

  • Chappaquais the largest hamlet of New Castle. Its center is located in the southeastern part of the town, but most of the town falls under Chappaqua's ZIP code.
  • Millwoodis another hamlet of New Castle, located in the northwest part of the town.
  • Tompkins Cornersis a community located between Chappaqua and Millwood at the Junction of NY Route 120 and NY Route 133

Where is New Castle

The Town of New Castle (villages of Chappaqua and Millwood) is located about 30 miles north of New York City. The town is bordered on the west by Mount Kisco and North Castle, east by Briarcliff Manor, Mount Pleasant and Ossining, north of Mount Pleasant, North Castle and Pleasantville and south of Cortlandt and Yorktown. The town is accessible to the Saw Mill Parkway and has a Metro North train stations at Chappaqua for an easy commute to New York City.
